About Coaching & Consultation
Scott's combined skills and experiences as a physical therapist and accomplished runner have led him to believe that the majority of people have the capabilities to run strong and pain free throughout their lives. Scott helps clients reach their potential no matter what their goals and experiences may be. He believes training is more than just logging miles and works with clients by finding out who they are as a runner and what they would like to accomplish with their running, whether it be wellness, longevity, or performance goals. After reviewing their training background and former training methods, Scott works with them to find areas in their training that need improvement or adjustment. Scott instructs the why of training, along with the what. Clients not only learn what to do, but more importantly, why they should do it.
Scott believes in building relationships with his clients. Many people request email coaching, but he insists on getting to know each athlete as an individual via phone, in person, or both. Email is used as a tool for communicating and transferring documents to refer to during sessions, but not as a primary means for consulting.
Training consults are 75 minute appointments done in person or via phone. Clients are encouraged to guide the consult session if they have specific topics they want to review and discuss. Topics may include sports nutrition, recovery, exercise physiology based training, running form, stretching, strengthening, racing, and other topics of the athlete's choice. Scott will start a session by asking specifically what the client is wishing to gain from the time together. Additionally most clients like to receive a training schedule for a specific time period, and this can be worked on together during the appointment time. Most clients with regularly scheduled consults will choose to reserve a portion of the consult time to design a schedule carrying them to the next appointment. This is typically a period of one to two weeks.
Scott's coaching and consult clients receive expert advice and guidance in all areas of training from what to eat and drink to planning their daily training sessions. His clients benefit by learning how to:
- be recovered for key training sessions and events
- run faster
- avoid bonking and lack of energy on training runs and races
- be properly fueled during training and racing
- place in age divisions and setting personal bests
- have less injuries
- peak at the right time
- avoid overtraining
- run strong second halves of races
